There should be a systematic approach to understanding and responding to change in diagnostic technologies. The pace of technological development is rapid and in some respects accelerating, and across an increasing spectrum of technologies and clinical areas. This has the potential to swamp decision making and priority setting bodies that may just not be able to process the necessary evidence quickly enough to meet the pace of change. This will undoubtedly require fresh insights into how we learn about, understand and make informed decisions about new technologies, how health technologies diffuse and the dynamic nature of health delivery systems themselves.
