This paper presents an integrated agro-ecological and socio-economic spatial global assessment of the inter-linkages of emerging biofuels developments, food security, and climate change. The explicit purpose is to quantify as to what extent climate change and expansion of biofuel production may alter the long-term outlook for food, agriculture and resource availability developed by the FAO in its Agriculture Toward 2030/50assessment (Alexandratos, 2009; Bruinsma, 2009; FAO, 2006). International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis’ (IIASA)’s modelling framework and models have been developed to analyze spatially the world food and agriculture system and evaluate the impacts and implications of agricultural policies. The modelling framework has recently been extended and adapted to explicitly incorporate the issues of biofuel development. A brief summary of the methods and models applied in this study is presented.
