The Workshop brought together a total of some 130 participants - thirty-five innovation specialists and practitioners and ninety-five observers and delegates from twenty-four OECD Member countries, thirty-six from UNESCO Member States, including seven participants from African countries: Cameroon, Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, Mozambique, Senegal and South Africa.The Workshop examined the role of innovation for development and the ways in which knowledge and research and development (R&D), especially in science, engineering and technology, contribute to innovation. Particular reference was given to social and economic development addressing basic needs and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in developing countries – with emphasis on Africa and least developed countries (LDCs). The following issues, challenges and an Action Agenda for Innovation were identified, and the need for international organizations with related interests such as OECD and UNESCO to work more closely together to promote innovation.
