Event: South Africa’s future in the hands of the ANC

Date: 06 Dec 2017
Time: 18:00 to 20:00
Venue: 6 Spin Street, Cape Town

The stakes for South Africa’s future have never been higher, as the African National Congress (ANC) heads towards its elective conference in December.

The ANC is racked by division and corruption. Front runners for the party’s leadership, Cyril Ramaphosa and Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, represent two very different visions for the ANC and ultimately the country. Whatever the outcome, the difficult tasks of tackling state capture and a reviving a moribund economy will remain.

This seminar will look at the possible outcomes of the conference and their impact on South Africa’s future.

Follow-up Horizon Scan on Priorities for Social-Ecological Scenarios

Notice-AltEcono01

Follow-up Horizon Scan on Priorities for Social-Ecological Scenarios

Dear colleagues,

We are happy to have launched the second stage of our horizon scan on priorities for social-ecological scenario research.

During the first stage we have 'harvested' 62 priority questions and issues, from >40 researchers and practitioners, from >35 institutions from all over the world, for which we are grateful.

With a small team we organized, merged and clustered these contributions into 28 key questions in 5 different categories. These 28 questions now serve as the basis for the second stage - the scoring and ranking phase. We ask researchers and practitioners to rate all the 28 questions, which allows ranking and revealing the real priorities. Also, we ask participants to suggest any crucial questions currently missing from the list.

Herewith I like to invite you to contribute to this second stage. The online form can be found here: https://goo.gl/VshWk8

It will take approx. 10 minutes of your time. The success of this community-based assessment greatly depends on the willingness of researchers and practitioners to contribute. We highly appreciate your effort.

In case you have contributed to the first stage of this Horizon Scan, please note that it may be possible that you do not immediately recognize your original suggestion, as we may have edited and merged questions with similar or overarching questions. If you think none of the final 28 questions cover the key point of your original contribution, and there is thus a crucial question missing from this list, please enter the question as a new contribution.

The results of this second stage will be shared with the community, and form the basis for a final iteration. More information about the project and the process can be found on the welcome page of the online form.

Please feel free to share this request with fellow scenario experts and practitioners.

Thanks in advance,

Kind regards,
Jan Kuiper

Interactive SOFI State of the Future Index

Interactive SOFI State of the Future Index

The State of the Future Index (SOFI) indicates the socioeconomic state of the world ten years hence. The Millennium Project constructs the SOFI based on the judgments of its worldwide network of experts regarding the most-plausible end values for selected macroeconomic, social and environmental measurements. Each SOFI constituent has been recorded for twenty or more years, providing a long-lived track record on which to base projections. Policy makers can use the SOFI as an easy-to-understand tool to assess the consequences of different policy choices, as well as for illustrating the combined potential outcomes of policies.

Africa Knows - Future Casting

Africa Knows - Future Casting

If you are a futurist with a passion for Africa, then join the Future Casting Workshop in Arusha, Aug 22nd, 2017.

We are looking for visionary thinkers to help us co-create Futures Scenarios for Africa 2050. I will be leading the workshop with other experienced futurists (Dr Wendy Schultz of Institute of Infinite Futures, Oxford) and several TED Fellows will be taking part. The workshop precedes the TED Global event in Arusha. https://tedglobal2017.ted.com/

Together, we want to scan the horizon for opportunities at points of dynamism, able to transform the lives of the poor and vulnerable in Africa by the year 2050, with a focus on health, livelihoods and energy sector.

Through a highly interactive methodology, which apply emerging trends to futures wheels, story board narratives and visual imagery, you can join about 25 others to create bold new futures scenarios for Africa in just one day. These tools are often used by business leaders and organizations to develop their long term business strategies and everyone who attends will develop more insights about the trends that are shaping African development from 2017 to 2050.

Although we do not offer a travel grant, we will pay for accommodation on Aug 21st and 22nd at the Arusha Hotel, and will organise all transportation for airport transfers.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact us. For more details and to register, please see http://futures.africaknows.com/arusha-event/
