Explores the evolution of cities, the diversity of city types and their energy use. The location of a city traditionally offers residents a benefit linked to employment, trade, resources or accessibility. Each city then typically follows a three-step development cycle, which enhances its attractiveness and drives growth. Growth can, however, slow or decline, for example due to the development of unattractive features such as pollution, crime and congestion or the loss of industries.
