Mobile Bibliozone

“The future of Africa is indeed “mobile”. Mobile applications for education and healthcare play a major role in all the trends that experts forecast up to the year 2020.”

Gudrun Porath at Future Challenges

In July, Foresight For Development turns the spotlight on the future of mobile.

Featured in Bibliozone this month is a collection of publications related to African & Global mobile futures. The selection of documents is partial and based on accessible material. Therefore, we would like to invite everyone to supplement our library with additional materials.

From our FFD library:

The topics we focus on in this issue include:

Mobile Trends 2020 Africa

Mobile Trends Africa brings together the predictions of 30+ industry professionals and local entrepreneurs in Africa. The project is co-curated by Erik Hersman, Ken Banks & Rudy De Waele.

Mobile Africa Report 2011: Regional Hubs of Excellence and Innovation

This report draws on primary research (including questionnaires sent to key mobile stakeholders in Africa) as well as secondary research. In 2008, imports of data enabled phones exceeded that of non-data enabled phones in many African markets. In 2009, the undersea cables hit East and Southern Africa in a big way. In 2010, mobile operators became serious about data availability and cost packaging for everyday Africans. 2011 is expected to bring a new type of data-enabled mobile user in Africa, and brings the mobile web to center stage.

Women & Mobile: A Global Opportunity A study on the mobile phone gender gap in low and middle-income countries

Mobile phone ownership in low and middle-income countries has skyrocketed in the past several years. But a woman is still 21% less likely to own a mobile phone than a man. This figure increases to 23% if she lives in in Africa, 24% if she lives in the Middle East, and 37% if she lives in South Asia. Closing this gender gap would bring the benefits of mobile phones to an additional 300 million women. By extending the benefits of mobile phone ownership to more women, a host of social and economic goals can be advanced.

Mobile Technologies and Empowerment: Enhancing human development through participation and innovation

By looking at basic concepts, current trends and real life examples, this publication intends to shed light on how development practitioners can harness the potential of mobile technologies to improve development outputs and outcomes at the country level.

mHealth for Development: The Opportunity of Mobile Technology for Healthcare in the Developing World

This report examines issues at the heart of the rapidly evolving intersection of mobile phones and healthcare. It helps the reader to understand mHealth’s scope and implementation across developing regions, the health needs to which mHealth can be applied, and the mHealth applications that promise the greatest impact on heath care initiatives.
